# In the first phase of our breeding experiments we collected a breeding group of sinistral individuals Cornu aspersum. In the course of six months there were at least six clutches, of which about 500 ofsprings hatched. All the F1 babies were dextrální.

#n the first phase of our breeding experiments we collected a breeding group of sinistral individuals Cornu aspersum. In the course of six months there were at least six clutches, of which about 500 ofsprings hatched. All the F1 babies were dextrální.  We have completed the verification of whether sinarity is portable with F1. Three offspring confirmed that the sinistrality of Helix aspersa is not a gametic mutation. All individuals from more than one hundred F1 offspring of the sinistral F0 breeding group were dextral. In research of possible maternal effect in sinistrality – also on our offsprings – continue assistant professor Angus Davison in Nottingham University. I am proud to have taken over to his university research and included several dextral individuals from sinistral F0 from my breeding station.

Kopulace sinistrálního x dextrálního jedince # Mating of sinistral x dextral individuals

Proto jsme přistoupili k následujícímu chovatelskému experimentu: Tři dvojice sinistrálního a dextrálního jedince Helix aspersa / Cornu aspersum Muller, 1772 byly izolovány ve třech samostatných boxech 23.10.2018.

Earlier studies have shown that in the case of bulk shells, coupling of a sinistral x dextral individual is unlikely (Gittenberger, Margy, 2011. Asami, Cowie 1998). Despite the previously published claims for Leptoxis ampla, Pleurocera prasinata, Pleurocera pyrenella and Pleurocera canaliculata, there is no evidence that they are overwintering sperm. (Whelan, Nathan, Ellen 2014). Lymnaea stagnalis keeps sperm on average slightly more than 2 months (Nakadera, Blom, Koene 2014). One year after the last eggs were harvested, only one of those who had once copulated was Arianta arbustorum (Haase, Baur 1995). Any impacted knowledge of the length of retention of viable foreign sperm in Helix aspersa could not be traced. Taking into account the advantages of research into mutants of an exceptionally mass-reared farm animal, it is possible to obtain information from agricultural production. In the EU, several tens of billions of Helix aspersa / Cornu aspersum are farmed within the livestock production range. Specific information is unmistakable, as the EU itself reports from 50 to 100 billion by its own sources, so more precise quantification based on input data with this scattering is completely irrelevant. According to the long-standing experience of the Nahošovice farm (over the years millions of Helix aspersa species), the usual reproductive cycle of Helix aspersa takes place in such a way that, after about five hours of copulation, the egg-laying individual can take these eggs for another five hours at most. Crucial for snowshade speed is the ability to dig into the substrate where Helix aspersa tolerates the egg, an individual tends to withstand eggs immediately. The clutter of other fertilized eggs over the next few days without mating over a number of years of the large-scale (hundreds of thousands of individuals at a time) has never been recorded (Čevela, 2018).

Therefore, we proceeded to the following breeding experiment: Three pairs of sinistral and dextral individual Helix aspersa / Cornu aspersum Muller, 1772 were isolated in three separate boxes on October 23, 2018. Still not in contact with other individuals.
18.11. In 2018, one sinistral individual died, the attempt was limited to two boxes.
10.12. In 2018 one of the boxes was found to be hatched.
These individuals can not yet be considered conclusive proof of the fruitful mating of the sinistral x dextral individual, since the effect of long-term stored sperm or autogenesis can not be ruled out. To fully demonstrate the reality, the experiment / breeding should be repeated over a longer period of time. Yet, thanks to rearing, it can be considered quite likely that a successful coupling can occur between the sinistral and dextral individual of the bulk shell.
