Schematic representation of the top view of the experimental set-up. The two chambers containing shrimps are placed in front of the cuttlefish, and the animal is motivated to swim toward one of the two chambers. The imaginary dotted line indicates the decision point, where the cuttlefish determines the choice.

Bude tedy podáno 12 krmných dávek vždy do levé misky.

Experiment ended. Snails are stupid.

New research into the intelligence of cuttlefish – albeit cephalopods, but not surprisingly intelligent squid, „mere“ cuttlefish – has fascinated me.

Therefore, I decided the experiment with a snails. Gastropods do not have a brain, only a ganglion nervous system. In biology, in all the sciences of the kingdom Animalia, but – unlike the sciences of mechanics – it is true: Yes, we must admit that the idea is childish and funny. But if it is not verified (and probably refuted) experimentally, it is not excluded. So I started to verify experimentally.

Phase 1 of the experiment – conditioning:
The maze built in the breeding box is built in such a way that from the starting position 0, the snail has 2 + 2 options necessary to get to the food. We will continuously document the food and its loss, we will always place the food in the same dose in the left bowl for 12 exposures after consumption / deterioration of the food. Therefore, 12 rations will always be given in the left bowl.
Phase 2 of the experiment – verification that the reflex was fixed:
In the breeding box, a double feed ration – 2 slices of cucumber – will be placed at least 12 times in a row in the right and left bowls of the maze. The loss of food will be continuously documented as in the 1st phase.

Evaluation

An attempt to teach the snail that the feeding is at the end of the labyrinth on the left, terminated due to the dullness of the experimental snails. After the third control feeding, it is clear that they did not learn anything. In the 1st test, the cucumber left strong traces of heat on the left and the right was intact. 2nd and 3rd testing turned out quite the opposite. Traces of corn were found only on the cucumber on the right, the left untouched. The snails did not learn that the food was on the left.

Result: Snails are stupid.
